Syrians in the U.S. at Risk of Losing Legal Status

Syrians in the U.S. at Risk of Losing Legal Status (Washington, D.C. - July 31, 2019) The American Relief Coalition for Syria (ARCS), of which the Multifaith Alliance for Syrian Refugees (MFA) is a member, said that tomorrow, August 1, 2019, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will announce its decision whether to renew Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syrians. Today, 7,000 Syrians in the United States are on TPS and an additional 7,000 Syrians in the U.S. who would benefit from redesignation of TPS. TPS continues to be crucial for thousands of Syrians. It allows them to work legally, resume their lives, and help keep them and their families safe. In the short time that TPS was des

Humanitarian Relief | 3,757 People Served in Arihah and Al Fu'ah

In June 2019, an MFA container of humanitarian relief was distributed to 3 villages and camps in northwest Syria. The container served 3,757 people — or 620 families — with relief supplies, including water purification kits, mujadara meal kits, and hygiene supplies. "The humanitarian crisis in northwest Syria is worsening every day," said a Watan Rise humanitarian aid worker during GlobalMedic supplies distribution to a displaced persons camp in Arihah in June 2019. Many of the families in Arihah have been displaced for more than a year, the majority fleeing the countryside of Damascus and Homs with nothing but the clothes on their back. Worse still, Watan Rise observed many people with dis

Call To Action | Refugee Resettlement Day of Action on August 3

Call To Action | Refugee Resettlement Day of Action Many faith-based and civic groups are joining together for a National Day of Action on Saturday, August 3rd to lift their voices in opposition to the possibility of this Administration banning all refugee resettlement in 2020. Recent Politico news reports indicate that officials are giving serious consideration to preventing any refugees from resettling in the US in the coming year. This would be devastating at a time when refugees like those from Syria are in such desperate need fleeing war, hunger and other intolerable situations. Here are some quick resources to learn more: • Rise for Refuge on Facebook - Add the Rise for Refuge Facebook

Call To Action | Urge Your Senators to Protect U.S. Refugee Resettlement

Call To Action | Urge Your Senators to Protect U.S. Refugee Resettlement Program Senator James Lankford (R.OK.) and Senator Coons (D.DE.) have drafted the attached bi-partisan letter to Administration officials calling for them to take action against the possibility of a zero refugee resettlement level for 2020. Politico last week revealed that this Administration is giving serious consideration to blocking all refugee resettlement for the coming year. Below is an excerpt from the Lankford-Coons letter: At a time when global leadership is needed more than ever to solve the complex refugee problem — both at home and abroad — the United States is well-positioned to continue its long legacy as

Broadway Sings for Syria

Broadway Sings for Syria | Benefit Performance Academy Award-winning actor F. Murray Abraham, Tony nominees Gideon Glick and Geneva Carr, and many other performers have come together to lend their voices in support of the humanitarian crisis in Idlib. In Idlib, the need is urgent. Civilians, schools, and medical facilities are being bombed. An estimated 330,000 people have fled their homes. Many now live in open fields without tents or shelter. As usual, children suffer the most. The Multifaith Alliance for Syrian Refugees needs your help. Join MFA for its first annual benefit to mobilize our community and raise awareness for this looming humanitarian crisis. Our Broadway community will perf

U.S. Refugee Admissions in 2020 Could Be Slashed to Zero

Image courtesy of Ilias Bartolini U.S. Refugee Admissions in 2020 Could Be Slashed to Zero Politico reports that this Administration may ban all refugees from US resettlement in 2020 is shocking news. As a nation of immigrants and one in which all faiths are reminded by their religious tenets “to welcome the stranger,” this would be a new low for America if it goes into effect. The Multifaith Alliance for Syrian Refugees comprised of over 100 faith-based and civic groups calls on Congress to make it clear that they firmly oppose this and will fight it. The stakes could not be higher: keeping our doors open to refugees like those from Syria who are fleeing from war, persecution and other horr

Humanitarian Relief | 5,142 People Served in Northwest Syria Amid Bombing

In May 2019, an MFA container of humanitarian relief was distributed to 7 internally displaced persons (IDP) camps and 3 health clinics in northwest Syria. The container served 5,142 people — or 891 families — with emergency supplies, including mujadara meals, basic hygiene supplies, and water purification kits. In response to continued violence in northwest Syria, MFA has continued to distribute emergency humanitarian relief to recently displaced Syrians that are in dire need of help. The distributions provided emergency food, hygiene supplies, and water purification kits to seven IDP camps and 3 health clinics in the Afrin area of northwest Syria. During the May distribution campaigns, 5,

UN Statement on Attacks on Civilians in Idlib

Image via UOSSM Statement by Mark Cutts, Deputy Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Syria Crisis on attacks on civilians in Idleb I am horrified by the ongoing attacks on civilian areas and civilian infrastructure as the conflict in northwest Syria continues. Yesterday, there was yet another attack on a civilian hospital. This time it was a surgical hospital in Kafr Nobol in Idleb, an underground hospital built during the war by humanitarian partners, with support from the United Nations, to provide life-saving medical support to civilians in a war zone. This latest attack, which took place on the afternoon of 4 July, was confirmed to the United Nations by the humanitarian team that ma
