The Sporkful with Dan Pashman reached out to MFA's Director of Humanitarian Relief and Regional Relations Shadi Martini to speak about a beloved sandwich shop in Aleppo called Serjieh for a podcast. Aleppo was the food capital of Syria and Serjieh was considered a pilgrimage site for food-lovers. But there is nothing in Syria—even a simple sandwich shop—that has been untouched by the war. Shadi, who was a hospital manager in Aleppo, spoke about the food at Serjieh and what going there meant to him. This led into a powerful conversation about Shadi’s own experiences in Aleppo, his remarkable work to aid his fellow Syrians, and what ultimately forced him to flee. Listen below.
